Finally! A Watchmen Cartoon!

By Zombiezeus on 03.06.2009

Newgrounds has hands-down the greatest, most subtle (in that it's not explicitly calling out the movie at all) Watchmen Merchandising/Marketing Bonanza parody of all time:

Wouldn't you watch an entire episode of this, even if it exists solely to make fun of what Alan Moore hates the most? I would absolutely be on board for that–perhaps even for an entire season. But seriously–most quickie flash animation is awful, and this, by "Happy Harry", is really well done. It's actually animated, for one–it's not just a few terrible, sloppy drawings that kind of move the way they're supposed to–it's got flair and style and is at least on par with lots of beloved 80's cartoons.

And all the little Watchmen allusions are genius–like the Comedian polishing off his Smiley Face pin (or wiping the blood from it?), Rorschach being 'a friend to animals', Silk Spectre reading to three Doc Manhattans in bed–awesome. Even the way everyone has an exaggerated 'surprised/happy' look to their eyes–genius! And of COURSE Silk Spectre would be an 80's pop music star with poor love-addled Comedian always looking for a kiss from her. That's EXACTLY what would happen if they had made a cartoon of this in 1987.

This is top-notch parody and deserves to be on the Watchmen DVD as an extra feature. In fact, at first, I thought it was one of the seemingly millions of viral videos the marketing team created for the movie. Nope. Just some brilliant fan out there poised for internet fame…

And always remember one of the greatest lyrics ever to be sung–"John can give you cancer, then he'll turn into a car."
